Picture a city. The tallest building on the skyline is the one that gets the most attention. The Skyscraper Technique is a classic SEO tactic to help you create content that outranks your competition’s content. With this tactic, you want to ask yourself: “How can I build the most impressive content.” First, choose a keyword that you want to rank on. Then, pick a high-ranking piece of content for that keyword by using a keyword finder, keyword volume tool, or just searching on your own. You can also use a competitor’s content on a topic that’s performing really well. Study it, and create your own unique version that’s better. Unlike building a skyscraper, making taller (or more) content doesn’t guarantee you’ll get more attention. Instead, look for holes in the content you’re looking to top. What new ideas can you include in your content? What if you explained the idea in a different way that was more fun —or easier to understand — for your target audience? Can you incorporate a wider variety of content, like images or videos? In the original Skyscraper Technique , after you create your content, you’re supposed to reach out to people who were linking to the content you’re trying to beat and ask them to link to your new content instead. Like saying “Hey, look at me!” However, emailing people for backlinks can have a very low return, and today SEO and rankings are a lot more complex. Here are some other ways to boost your new (and better) content above the competition’s: Try it as a guest post on a site that has more authority than yours Work to build the authority of your own site Promote your content through social channels Reach out to influencers who would be interested in your content
